LPS Lubrication Tips

Jager Engineering Garage9 exclusively uses LPS products on all studio cars, parts service/maintenance and product development. The LPS brand is recognized worldwide in the industrial, aviation, electrical and hardware trade channels as the value-added premium product.   Have a look at their website for information on their corrosion inhibitors, lubricants, penetrants and other well developed products.

        1.  Hunting or Wavering Idle on S4
Inject LPS#2 into pipe as shown. First with engine off, then with engine on for about 10 seconds, holding onto the red spout so it doesn't get sucked in! Shut down the engine and let it soak. This will lubricate a sticking idle stabilizer. Restart and test - your S4 will be purring like never before. A second application may be required.

        2. Less-than-Supercar Performance
The throttle cable stretches over a few years. Check to see you are getting a fully open position. Also check that the kickdown switch is operative and the accelerator pedal does not "miss" the switch. LPS#2 makes a fine accelerator cable and lever assembly lubricant.

        3. Door Won't Stay Open
This is a real annoying problem - fortunately there is an easy solution. Have a look at our very popular Door Arrestor Kit. Grease the arrestors for quiet operation. Use LPS#2 on a regular basis for easy lube of door, hood, and hatch hinges and latches

        4. Torque Tube
The rattle at idle is the bearings in their races, as the driveshaft vibrates with no load (auto trans).  Check tightness of the rear pinch bolt.

        5. Stuck/Squealing Brakes, Storage
We use LPS #2 to protect and maintain effective brakes in high moisture conditions. LPS #2 aids in smooth operation and prevents corrosion. Use around the caliper boots and pad mounting points. LPS may also be used inside the parking brake drum and shoe mechanisms to prevent rust.

        6. Sticky Door
For locks that are difficult or impossible to use, several applications of LPS #2 followed by a good synthetic grease should restore operation.

        7. Rear Wiper Fix
The rear wiper motor driven "triangle" must float to maintain proper contact with the wiper arm. Unfortunately the shaft needs regular lubrication to prevent getting stuck down. Regular applications of LPS #2 will dissolve and prevent corrosion in this area.

       8.  Handling is Off
If your handling is off and you've likely checked all the basics, have a look at your bearings.  We've found the 928 is very sensitive to wear and play on the front bearings. New bearings should correct a non-linear response on turn-in. The rear tires are very important to the feel and ride quality of the car however they wear out quite quickly.  Tires that are older than 4 years old become noisy, ride more harshly and lose wet traction abilities.

        9. Hot air ingress on Console
For Auto transmissions - There is a foamie sealing block squashed by the Torque Tube to seal the cutout for the shifter. If the the tube drops (sunken motor mounts) or has been compromised (eaten by mice, they love it) air will move from high pressure under the car to low inside. This is a dangerous condition, especially with exhaust leaks.
You can fashion a seal to block the shifter hole using EVA foam until you can drop the tube and replace the foamie.

        10. Brake Pedal Doesn't Feel Right, ABS System kicks in right after start
A feature of the ABS program. We've found the brake pedal free play adjust is critical to how the brakes of the 928 feel. Add excessive free play to that ABS pump buzz routine on the first move of the day you'll feel as though you'll run into the house!
Have your brake system checked, and make sure the pedal free play is EXACTLY to specification.

        11. Repair squeaking/dry dc motors and actuators
As motors age the grease that lubricates the shafts and bearings tends to dry up. Heater fan motors will squeak, window motors get sluggish, and moving parts start to bind-up. Lately we've been implementing an LPS quick fix by method of liberal injection. We start with one or two small and carefully drilled pilot holes strategically placed for injection of LPS#2. This is preferred over complete disassembly of the unit, which often results in destruction of the part anyway. We've quickly repaired heater fan motors, a cooling/rad fan motor and other several other devices with this technique and are encouraged at the results. Often the offending part can stay right in the vehicle.
